In recent years there is no doubting the spike in popularity that has occurred in women’s sport. This was certainly evidenced in the summer when England’s women’s football team saw record viewing figures on their journey to the World Cup semi-finals.
And, at this year’s Leicester Mercury Sports Awards a special award will recognise the impact regional sporting women have made.
The ‘Women’s Participation in Sport Award’ will recognise a woman who has dedicated themselves to their sport whether this as an athlete themselves, as a coach or volunteer.
One of 14 awards up for grabs on the night, this category has received the backing of specialist construction firm Nicholls Colton.
Experts in engineering and environmental data, for over 50 years they have offered a wide range of construction services to clients in a number of sectors.
Danielle Elliot is the Commercial Manager at Nicholls Colton and she explained why they decided to come on board as category sponsors.
“As with our previous sponsorship of the ‘Junior Sportswoman of the Year’ award we want to ensure that we continue support the important contribution made by women in both sport and in our industry,” she said.
“We aim to help attract more women to long term careers in the construction industry.”
As nominations draw to a close it will then be down to a panel of judges to decide on who the winner of this award will be.
Danielle highlighted the type of qualities that the winner of this category will possess.
“We hope to see success achieved through participation, dedication and commitment. Whether this success is at community engagement level, through inspiring others, or through high level, team or individual, performance,” she said.
“We believe the main skills to succeed in sport are personal traits of resilience, dedication and persistence and a willingness to listen.”
Based in Leicester, they have recently opened a second HQ and Danielle discussed how they’ve enhanced their offering in 2019.
“Having recently opened a new office in London we expect to increase the services offered from this new base alongside expansion of our capabilities and capacity in Leicester.”
The ceremony itself will take place at Leicester Tigers’ Welford Road Stadium on Thursday 16 January bringing together some of the region’s greatest sporting figures.
