Nominations for the Leicester Mercury Sports Awards recently opened and ever since entries have been flying in from sportspeople across the region with sights set on one of the 13 different categories that are up for grabs.
When the event returns to Leicester Tigers Stadium on Thursday 16 January, among the line-up of finalists – who will be decided later this year – will be sportsmen, between the ages of 11 and 18, who will be awaiting the result of the Junior Sportsman of the Year award.
A category sponsored by Western Power Distribution, who are the electricity distribution network operator for the Midlands, South Wales and the South West, it applauds young rising stars.
These junior athletes could well be the next generation of European, World or Olympic champions and will be balancing school, GCSEs and even A Levels, with their amateur sporting pursuits.
Colin Randle is Western Power’s Distribution Manager and explained more about their sponsorship.
“We know the important role sport plays for people in Leicester and as a company that operates in the area, we wanted to show our support,” he said.
“It’s a real pleasure to be part of the build-up to the event and as a company that delivers leading reliable and safe electricity to homes and business in the area, we are pleased to acknowledge those who share our work ethic and high performing standards.”
Continuing, Mr Randle praised the category and acknowledged the determination these young individuals must have to succeed at a competitive level.
“We’re pleased to support the Junior Sportsman of the Year Award,” he commented. “It is a great opportunity to recognise the hard work and skills of young people right here in the city.
“This award recognises young individuals who have achieved great success at an early age and are shining examples for this city.”
“They will have a huge level of self-sacrifice, be determined, work hard, have both technical and mental ability and a bit of luck along the way too.”
Nominations are open if you wish to enter yourself or on behalf of someone else in one of the 14 award categories. To do so, visit: www.leicestermercurysportsawards.co.uk.
