Independent family brewery Everards of Leicestershire is giving back to the place it has called home since 1849 by sponsoring one the region’s premier community-focussed events.
Everards, whose beers can be found in more than 175 pubs across the East Midlands, has confirmed its sponsorship of this year’s Leicester Mercury Sports Awards.
The annual affair will return on Thursday 16 January to Welford Road Stadium where local sportspeople competing at junior, amateur and professional level will come together for an evening of recognition and celebration.
Everards, who are the official beer supplier to the Leicester Tigers, Riders and Leicester Squash Club, have strong affiliations with Leicestershire sports clubs and found a fitting match in the Club of the Year Award after sponsoring it last year also.
This award is one of the 14 categories set to be presented on the night and recognises outstanding sporting clubs who have progressed significantly in recent times.
“Pubs and sport go hand in hand,” said Erika Hardy, the Head of Marketing at Everards who discussed the sponsorship decision.
“Sports clubs are at the heart of local communities in much the same way as a local pub is. We’re as passionate about supporting this community spirit as we are about beer.
“From small clubs to ones as big as our partners Leicester Tigers and Leicester Riders, we’re thrilled to celebrate sporting endeavours and the contributions clubs make to their communities.”
Last year, Everards presented the winning trophy to Borough Alliance Football Club who support footballers of all ages, genders and abilities.
The club was commended for its exponential development including earning FA Community Club status.
While the winning decision is down to an external panel of judges, Erika and the team at Everards still have a clear view of what they hope to see in 2019’s winner.
“The winner of this category is following in the footsteps of an extremely worthy winner last year and we hope to once again see a club that has made a positive contribution to their local and sporting community leave with the accolade,” she said.
“There needs to be a noticeable passion for what they do and a determination to achieve goals as well as great communication skills and an outstanding team ethic.”
