Neville Hamilton Award

The Neville Hamilton Award is one of the most important of the Leicester Mercury Sports Awards evening – and certainly the most poignant.

Each year, the nominations for the award invariably highlight a story which is worthy of special praise. It might be the outstanding efforts of an individual or the performances of a club which come to light.

Before 2009, the category was simply called the Judges’ Award and one of those judges was the former Leicester City footballer Neville Hamilton.

The Leicester Mercury Sports Awards is now in its 21st year, but it was Neville, as one of the judges, who helped establish the event across the Leicestershire and Rutland sporting community.

Neville, who also went on to coach at Leicester City after his playing career with his home-town club, along with Wolves and Mansfield, sadly died in February 2009.

The event organisers felt it was only fitting that the Judges’ Award was, therefore, renamed in Neville’s honour, as it has been for every year since. The present judges – Nick Carter, George Smolinski, Edwin James, Nicky Collett and George Oliver – have the task of making sure Neville’s memory is suitably marked.

Last year, the award went to Carl Gunns, who has dedicated himself to his community boxing gym, which helps young children and adults in Leicestershire, Carl is renowned for being able to engage with hard to reach individuals and foster a welcoming, knowledgeable gym environment where people can come to achieve their goals – no matter how big or small.

This year, the honour will have another hugely deserving recipient.
